Dangote cement reaffirms commitment to road safety, trains over 200 drivers

The management of Dangote Cement Plc says it remains committed to promoting safety on Nigerian roads through continuous training and retraining of its drivers.
NAN reports that Arvind Pathak, the group managing director of Dangote Cement, spoke during the 2025 annual driver’s retreat held at the company’s Ibese plant in Ogun state.
The retreat, with the theme “Drive Safely, Arrive Safely”, featured the training of more than 200 drivers.
Pathak said the company would continue to collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards, adding that the authorities were also actively involved in monitoring and evaluation of the firm’s practices.
He reaffirmed Dangote Cement’s commitment to transparency, ethical conduct, and adherence to detailed systems designed to minimise incidents on the road.
“Dangote is a responsible organisation that consistently cooperates with the Nigeria Police and other relevant authorities in the investigation of reported incidents, while implementing recommendations that strengthen public safety,” he said.
The managing director explained that every Dangote driver undergoes a rigorous recruitment process, including possession of a valid Class G driver’s licence, background checks, guarantor verification, and comprehensive medical examinations such as eye tests, blood pressure, body mass index, and random blood sugar levels. Drug and alcohol tests are also mandatory.
He said only applicants who successfully complete a two-week intensive training programme—covering 12 safety modules, practical driving assessments, and written examinations—are certified to operate Dangote vehicles.
“In the past two months alone, over 500 prospective drivers have completed this process, and only those meeting all requirements have been engaged,” he added.
According to him, the company also conducts mandatory pre-trip medical assessments and random drug tests across its operations, while enforcing strict behavioural and safety standards to discourage reckless driving.
James Adenuga, the group chief, health, safety, social and environment officer of Dangote Industries Limited, said the retreat was designed to reinforce safety awareness among drivers in practical terms.
Oje Ebhota, a road safety expert, who delivered a paper on “Safe Driving Habits for Accident-Free Journeys”, advised drivers to avoid dangerous overtaking and maintain a speed limit of 60km per hour to reduce risks of road crashes.
