The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on Tuesday inaugurated the Ibadan community guard, a grassroots security outfit aimed at complementing conventional policing across the city’s 11 LGAs.
The ceremony, held at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, also featured the unveiling of “Gaari Ibadan”, an economic and food security programme designed to promote local production, boost economic growth, and ensure food sustainability within the metropolis.
Speaking at the event, Oba Ladoja emphasised the need for collective responsibility in protecting lives and property.
“Security is not the sole responsibility of the government; it requires the active participation of all residents,” the monarch said.
“The community guard will be strategically deployed across all 11 local government areas to strengthen surveillance and support our security agencies.”
The Ibadan community guard is structured to work closely with relevant security agencies, enhancing community-based policing and addressing security challenges in vulnerable areas of the ancient city.
On the economic front, the “Gaari Ibadan” initiative, driven by the Ibadan Economic Investment and Business Development Desk in collaboration with the Ibadan food security initiative, aims to support local farmers and traders, strengthen the food value chain, and drive economic sustainability in Ibadanland.
The inauguration attracted notable dignitaries, including members of the Olubadan-in-council; Onikepo Akande, former minister of industry and Iyalaje Iyalode of Ibadanland; Sharafadeen Alli, senator representing Oyo south; Fatai Owoseni, former Lagos commissioner of police; Jubril Dotun Sanusi, entrepreneur; and Ajeniyi Ajewole, the president-general of the Central Council of Ibadanland, among others.
“Our commitment is clear: peace, security, and sustainable development must go hand in hand,” Oba Ladoja added.
The event signals a significant step in enhancing both security and economic resilience in Ibadan, reinforcing the monarch’s dedication to community welfare and sustainable urban development.
