Tinubu committed to repositioning police through education, says Alausa

Tunji Alausa, minister of education, says President Bola Tinubu is committed to repositioning the police through education, with plans underway to upgrade the police academy and related institutions nationwide.
Attah Ikharo, media aide to the education minister, said in a statement that Alausa spoke in Abuja on Monday during a meeting with Tunji Disu, the inspector-general of police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, former IGP, and other senior officers.
According to Alausa, the engagement is part of the administration’s broader agenda to strengthen the police force’s capacity through structured education and institutional reforms.
“This meeting is in continuation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to reposition the police to deliver on its core mandate and improve security across the country,” he said.
A major focus of the discussion was the establishment of a southern campus of the Police Academy in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, with detailed plans covering infrastructure design and physical development in Erije.
The minister directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to fast-track resource verification to enable the institution commence academic activities.
He said the federal government aims for the new campus to admit its first set of students between September and November 2026.
Alausa also revealed plans to optimise the capacity of over 42 police colleges across the country by converting them into specialised monotechnics focused on industry-relevant training for police personnel.
He noted that a presidential waiver already exists to support this transition without breaching regulatory moratorium requirements.
To drive implementation, the minister announced the establishment of three committees: one on resource verification, another on capacity development in police colleges, and a third on infrastructure and physical development for the new academy campus.
On her part, Suwaiba Said Ahmed, minister of state for education, commended the initiative and assured the police hierarchy of the ministry’s support in ensuring the project’s success.
Speaking at the meeting, Disu emphasised the importance of education in addressing challenges across sectors, including policing.
He said the Nigeria Police is focused on introducing courses that will directly enhance personnel capacity and strengthen national security outcomes.
