Lola Akande, Nigeria’s ambassador to Sweden, has presented her Letters of Credence to King Carl XVI Gustaf, formally commencing her diplomatic responsibilities in the country.
According to a statement published on Facebook by the federal ministry of foreign affairs, Akande presented the credentials to the Swedish monarch on September 16, 2026.
During an audience with the king after the ceremony, Akande conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Bola Tinubu to the monarch, as well as the government and people of Sweden.
The ministry said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the longstanding relations between Nigeria and Sweden and explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
The discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation through mutually beneficial partnerships between Nigerian and Swedish businesses and institutions.
The two sides also highlighted potential areas of cooperation including sustainable development, digital technology and innovation, education, green transition and environmental sustainability.
According to the statement, the areas were identified as important pillars of contemporary bilateral engagement with potential to advance the development objectives of both countries.
Akande reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with Swedish authorities to strengthen existing partnerships and identify new areas of cooperation.
The ministry said the ceremony marked the formal commencement of Akande’s diplomatic responsibilities in Sweden and provided an opportunity to reinforce relations between both countries.
Akande is expected to focus on strengthening people-to-people contacts, institutional exchanges and initiatives aimed at delivering benefits to Nigerians and Swedes.
