Abdulganiyu Jaji, the controller general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), says the service will introduce technologies to enhance response times and prevent fires.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Jaji said the service will deploy the national fire detection and alarm system (NAFDAS) and the N-alert fire alarm for the purpose.
He also praised the proactive steps taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration approved the procurement of advanced firefighting equipment and the renovation of the National Fire Academy Sheda to better equip the service.
Jaji highlighted the agency’s efforts in 2024, noting that it saved property worth N1.94 trillion and responded to over 30,000 emergency calls, saving 30,890 lives.
He added that over 100 lives were lost in fire-related incidents during the year, including devastating petrol tanker explosions, fires at markets, filling stations, and religious centers.
He reiterated that the primary focus of the agency remains on public safety, particularly preventing fire outbreaks and mitigating the devastating effects of such incidents across the country.
With the ongoing harmattan season posing additional risks due to low humidity and increased fire hazards, the controller general called on filling station operators, gas refilling centers, and the general public to adhere strictly to fire safety protocols.
Jaji commended Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, for his strategic leadership and the reforms being implemented under the renewed hope agenda, which he noted have already resulted in positive outcomes.
He called on stakeholders to support the repeal and re-enactment of the outdated Fire Service Act of 1963, which he believes would significantly enhance the effectiveness of the FFS in its mission.
