Court nullifies Obasa’s removal as Lagos assembly speaker

A Lagos high court in Ikeja has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly is illegal and unconstitutional.
Yetunde Pinheiro, the presiding judge, invalidated the house’s resolutions and actions that resulted in Obasa’s removal in a ruling on Wednesday.
After his impeachment while abroad, Obasa challenged the decision of the Lagos house of assembly in court.
Mojisola Meranda, who became the speaker and the house of assembly, were the defendants in the case.
Obasa contended through his lawyer Afolabi Fashanu that 36 legislators had decided to remove him while the assembly was on recess and he was abroad.
He maintained that the session was invalid, as it was convened without his authority or a formal delegation of power, in violation of the house’s procedures.
The suit was based on nine grounds, referencing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the standing orders of the Lagos state house of assembly.
