IGP puts police on red alert, laments killing of officers during protest

Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), says he has put all units on red alert after a police officer was reported killed during the #EndbadGovernance protest.

“Our officers are fully mobilised and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order,” the IGP said at a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

The police chief lamented that some of his men were also injured by hoodlums who disguised as protesters, adding that some police stations were also razed during the protest.

He noted that events in major cities on were “mass uprising and looting, not protests”.

Egbetokun added that the leaders of the protests were not around to lead the rallies despite the initial warnings by the police, noting that hoodlums took over the demonstrations.

“Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses,” he said.

“In places like FCT, Kaduna, Kano and Gombe, among others, we recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on our security personnel where one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured.

“There were unprovoked attacks on policemen and other security agents…my advice is that they (protesters) should not bother to continue with this (protest).”
