CPJ: 2024 deadliest year for journalists — almost 70% killed by Israel

The CPJ report said Israel was responsible for nearly 70 percent of these deaths.

A new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has revealed that 2024 was the deadliest year for journalists worldwide, with at least 124 killed across 18 countries.

The CPJ report said Israel was responsible for nearly 70 percent of these deaths.

CPJ data shows a 22 percent increase in journalist killings from 2023, largely driven by the Israel-Gaza war, which accounted for 85 deaths—82 of whom were Palestinian journalists. Sudan and Pakistan followed, each reporting six journalist fatalities.

“This is the most dangerous time to be a journalist in CPJ’s history,” said Jodie Ginsberg, the CPJ chief executive officer (CEO).

“The war in Gaza has severely impacted journalists and signals a broader decline in global norms for their protection.”

At least 24 journalists were deliberately targeted and murdered for their work in 2024.

CPJ said it documented 10 cases in which Israeli forces killed journalists in Gaza and Lebanon, while the remaining 14 murders occurred in Haiti, Mexico, Pakistan, Myanmar, Mozambique, India, Iraq, and Sudan.

Freelancers, who often work with limited protection, made up over 35 percent (43) of all journalists killed.

In Gaza, 31 Palestinian freelancers were among the casualties as international media remained largely barred from the region, except for rare military-escorted visits.
