Newlywed army officer dies after wife ‘sets him ablaze’ in Akwa Ibom

Samson Haruna, a newly commissioned army officer, has died after his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak LGA of Akwa Ibom state.
Haruna, a medical doctor from Jos, Plateau state, joined the Nigerian Army in 2024 and was commissioned as a lieutenant.
He got married to his wife, a nurse, in April 2025 — barely five months before the tragic incident.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the couple had a heated argument on September 22, over allegations of infidelity.
In the course of the altercation, the wife reportedly poured petrol on her husband and set him on fire.
The officer was initially taken to the military clinic within the barracks and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is in custody. She is expected to be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
