The senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students for various disciplinary offences.

In a statement on Sunday, Habib Yakoob, acting director of information and relations at UniAbuja, said the decision was taken at the institution’s 191st regular senate meeting held on January 28, at the university’s main campus, following the consideration of a report and recommendations submitted by the student disciplinary committee.

Yakoob said the affected students were found culpable of offences, including threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary and theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, and falsification of O’ level results uploaded on the university portal for admission.

“The senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students who failed to honour repeated invitations by the disciplinary committee despite several notices,” the statement reads.

“In addition, nine students were exonerated after investigations, while 33 others were issued warnings for various infractions, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.”

Yakoob added that Hakeem Fawehinmi, the vice-chancellor and chairman of senate, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.

Fawehinmi said the university would continue to uphold discipline and enforce its rules and regulations without compromise.

“The academic integrity of the university is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned,” the statement quoted the VC as saying.

“Our goal is not only to enforce discipline but also to guide our students towards responsible citizenship and academic excellence.”

The vice-chancellor commended the student disciplinary committee for what he described as a thorough handling of the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly to avoid actions that could jeopardise their academic pursuits.

He added that the university would continue to strengthen student engagement, counselling and orientation programmes aimed at promoting responsible conduct and preventing disciplinary infractions.
