Sonny Echono, executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), have bagged legacy awards for educational advancement.
NAN reports that Echono and Oloyede were also inducted into the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) Hall of Fame for their contributions to the education sector.
COEASU celebrated the two chief executives at an occasion to mark the 2024 World Teachers’ Day.
Echono, while receiving the award from Yusuf Sununu, the minister of state for education, in Abuja on Friday, thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity given to him to serve.
He pledged to continue to rededicate his efforts toward ensuring that taxpayers’ money contributed for the development of education was prudently and judiciously deployed.
“We seize this opportunity to congratulate teachers around the globe for celebrating their day and we feel honoured that they have chosen this occasion to also honour us by giving us the legacy award and inducting us into their hall of fame,” the TETFund boss said.
“It is in recognition of our service and contributions during my tenure as Permanent Secretary in the ministry for four years and Executive Secretary of TETFund.
“On behalf of the board of trustees, management and staff, we express our appreciation and renew the assurances that we will continue to rededicate our efforts.
“This is to ensure that taxpayers’ money contributed for the development of education is prudently and judiciously deployed.”
The event also featured scholarship award to outstanding students at the colleges of education in the six-geopolitical zones of the country.
The overall best student in the country, Mubarak Latona, in an interview, expressed gratitude to God and the union for the award.
Latona, a student at the Federal College of Education, Iwo, Osun state, pledged to impact the future generation with his skills and abilities.
“There is one principle I take and that is when every preparation meets opportunity, it leads to success. So, I have always been prepared,” he said.
“When the opportunity came, I did not find it difficult to tackle the exams. I have the desire to become a teacher because I want to be impactful to everyone that I come across.”
A N500,000 prize was given to the outstanding student from each of the six geo-political zones, while the overall best student in the country got N1 million.
