Following his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He picked the party’s membership card on Monday in the presence of David Mark, national chairman of the ADC, among others, in Kano.

In a message posted on his Facebook page, where he shared pictures from the event, Kwankwaso wrote, “New Dawn. We are ADC.”

Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP, announced his resignation from the party on Sunday.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he wrote in his resignation letter.

“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.

“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time.

“I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”

Aminu Gwarzo, the deputy governor of Kano, has tendered his resignation, citing the need to ensure effective governance in the state and to dedicate more time to the Kwankwasiyya movement ahead of the 2027 general election.

Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, announced on Friday that Gwarzo had officially resigned as Kano state’s deputy governor.

According to Mohammed, the decision, though difficult, was made in the best interest of the people and the stability of governance in the state.

He explained that recent circumstances had constrained the full realisation of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office, noting that the resignation is intended to allow the office to function optimally for public service.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly,” the statement reads.

“The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people.”

Mohammed added that the move is also seen as a demonstration of statesmanship, political maturity, and a commitment to peace, aimed at avoiding unnecessary tensions that could hinder governance and development.

He noted that Gwarzo will now focus on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement, rebuilding its structures, and engaging in political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

The post Kano deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo resigns first appeared on The Times of Abuja.
