Ex-IGP Solomon Arase dies in Abuja hospital

Former inspector-general of police (IGP) Solomon Arase is dead.

According to multiple reports, Arase, who also served as the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), died at the Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, on Sunday.

Although details surrounding his death remain unclear, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the report.

Arase was Nigeria’s 18th IGP, serving from April 2015 to June 2016 before retiring from active service.

He was later appointed chairman of the PSC in January 2023 by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held until June 2024, when he was removed by President Bola Tinubu.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan west LGA of Edo state, Arase graduated with a bachelor of science in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force on December 1, 1981, later earning a law degree from the University of Benin and a master’s degree from the University of Lagos.

Before becoming IGP, Arase headed the criminal intelligence and investigation bureau, the force’s premier intelligence unit.

He also served as commissioner of police in Akwa Ibom state and assistant inspector-general of police in charge of Intelligence.
