In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, Kwankwaso also disclosed that Nasiru Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat under the party’s platform.

Gwarzo is the immediate former governor of Kano. He resigned from his position after Abba Yusuf, the governor, defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the platform on which they were elected to the office.

Gawuna was the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kano. He recently left the party to has join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before eventually pitching tent with the NDC.

Kwankwaso said the decisions were guided by what he described as “equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence,” adding that the values remain central to the party’s ideology and the Kwankwasiyya political movement.

He expressed confidence that the selections would strengthen unity within the party and improve its chances in the forthcoming elections.

Kwankwaso also prayed for a smooth and peaceful affirmation process, expressing optimism that the party would record success at the polls.

“As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections,” he said.

In a resignation letter dated March 29, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna ward, Nassarawa LGA, the former deputy governor described his decision as “voluntary and personal.”

“I hereby formally resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective March 29, 2026,” the letter reads in part.

Gawuna expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities given to him during his time as a member but did not disclose his next political move.

His resignation comes amid growing political realignments in Kano, where key actors have continued to shift alliances ahead of future elections.

Sources close to the former deputy governor said he is expected to meet with Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano state, at his Miller Road residence.

The development is seen as part of ongoing political manoeuvres in the state, which have intensified following recent defections and alignments among major political figures.
