TETFund: New research labs to end need for sending samples abroad

By Temidayo Idris

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) says its new multidisciplinary research laboratories will allow Nigerian researchers to carry out all types of research locally, ending the need to send samples abroad for analysis.

According to the agency, six such laboratories are being established across the country.

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), led by its President, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi.

Echono said four of the state-of-the-art facilities are currently under construction in Port Harcourt, Kano, Abuja and Lagos, while work on two more will begin before the end of the year.

A former president of the NIA, Echono also pledged to mobilise friends of the agency to support the furnishing of the Institute’s Resource and Exhibition Centre, which is currently under construction. He further announced the endowment of an annual prize at the NIA Architecture Annual Awards and sponsorship of the institute’s journal, among other initiatives.

The TETFund boss added that the agency would soon commission several iconic projects nationwide, with four of them to be unveiled in Kano and Osun states before the end of the month.

“When I came in, I observed that our campuses were dotted with all sorts of buildings. We are now moving towards iconic structures that reflect the ambience and grandeur associated with campuses worldwide,” he said.

“On Thursday, we will commission some of these projects in Kano, and later in Osun. Nigerians will begin to see what our campuses should look like — not the deplorable conditions shown in some viral videos.”

Earlier, Adeniyi commended TETFund’s contributions to infrastructure development in the education sector.

She called for greater patronage of NIA members, particularly in designing institutional projects.

“These interventions have left indelible marks in the annals of our educational development,” she said.

“We especially commend the TETFund centres of Excellence (TCoEs) initiative across tertiary institutions nationwide. The ambience and presence of our first-generation universities reflect what true citadels of learning should be.”
