NCDC confirms 1,307 cholera cases, 34 deaths nationwide

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says the country has recorded 1,307 suspected cases of cholera across 30 states and 98 LGAs.

Jide Idris, the director-general of NCDC, who spoke in Abuja on Friday during a health security briefing, said 34 cholera-related deaths have also been confirmed.

He lamented that the mortality from cholera presently stood at 2.6 percent of all cases, noting that it is more than the target of less than one percent.

The NCDC boss added that cholera, a highly contagious sickness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is still common in Nigeria, especially in areas with poor access to sanitary facilities and clean water.

He cautioned that as the country approaches the peak of the rainy season, a concerning trend in cholera transmission is emerging.

“The proactive dissemination of localised flood risk data is expected to drive coordinated action at the federal, state, and community levels, ensuring timely interventions that can help prevent waterborne disease outbreaks like cholera. NCDC is actively tracking these occurrences,” he said.

“As of epidemiological week 16 (ending 20 April 2025), 1,307 suspected cases of cholera have been reported across 30 states and 98 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with 34 associated deaths, resulting in a CFR of 2.6 percent. This rate is well above our target of less than one percent.”
