‘Victory demonstrates people’s choice’ — Atiku congratulates Adeleke on Osun poll win
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, over his electoral victory in the state’s just concluded governorship election.
In a congratulatory message posted on his Facebook page, Atiku described Adeleke’s victory as a demonstration of the people’s choice.
“I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State. His victory demonstrates the choice of the people of Osun as expressed at the ballot box,” Atiku, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), wrote.
“I commend the people for their passion and peaceful participation. I wish Governor Adeleke continued success as he continues to serve them.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke, candidate of the Accord, winner of the election after polling 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes.
Joshua Ogunwole, the INEC returning officer for the election, announced Adeleke as the winner after the final results were collated.
Declaring the result, Ogunwole said Adeleke had satisfied the requirements of the law and secured the highest number of votes in the election.
“I, Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, the returning officer, therefore, declare that Ademola Adeleke of the Accord, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes in this election, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” he said.
Adeleke won the election with a margin of 66,252 votes over Oyebamiji.
Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was a distant third with 17,180 votes.
The election was held across the state on Saturday, with voters casting their ballots to elect the governor who will administer Osun for the next four years.
