Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have discussed the country’s forthcoming general elections, security, migration and developments in West Africa as both sides seek to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, minister of foreign affairs, held talks with Gautier Mignot, EU ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), at the ministry in Abuja on Thursday.
The discussions also covered multilateral cooperation, sustainable development and preparations for high-level engagements between Nigeria and the EU.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the EU’s continued engagement with Nigeria and called for existing partnerships to translate into practical programmes and measurable outcomes that support the country’s development priorities.
She also stressed the importance of sustained dialogue on security, migration, economic development and democratic governance.
The minister and Mignot agreed to maintain regular consultations, strengthen high-level exchanges and improve existing mechanisms for cooperation in areas of shared interest.
Both sides also stressed the need for timely communication and follow-up through established diplomatic channels to ensure the implementation of agreed outcomes.
The meeting, according to the ministry, reflected the broad scope of Nigeria-EU relations and the shared objective of strengthening existing partnerships.
