Awuje of Ijebu-Ode dies at 91

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebu-Ode, has passed on. He was aged 91.

In a statement on Sunday, Dapo Abiodun, the governor Ogun state, announced Awujale’s passing.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the statement reads.

“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general.

“It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that the former President, Muhammadu died in a London, the United Kingdom hospital.”

In June the revered monarch failed to make an appearance at the annual Ojude Oba cultural festival.

Fassy Yusuff, the coordinator of the 2025 Ojude Oba festival, explained the absence of the traditional ruler, saying he was recuperating at home after being discharged from a Lagos hospital.

The explanation followed widespread anxiety over the Awujale’s conspicuous absence at the festival.

The Ojude Oba festival, renowned for its glamour and cultural significance, drew thousands of guests and tourists to the Awujale pavilion.

Many were surprised not to see the revered traditional ruler, who for decades has graced the occasion in person to receive tributes from dignitaries and indigenes of Ijebuland.

His wife, Olori Kemi Adetona, represented Oba Adetona in his absence. Addressing speculations surrounding the monarch’s health, Yusuff reassured the public that there was no cause for alarm.
