Corps members to serve in NDLEA rehab centres, says NYSC

Olakunle Nafiu, the director general (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), says the scheme will be deploying corps members to the counselling and rehabilitation centres of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Nafiu spoke during a courtesy visit to Buba Marwa, chairman of the NDLEA, at the headquarters of the anti-narcotic agency in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Caroline Embu, the acting spokesperson of NYSC, the DG was responding to a request by Marwa, who noted that NDLEA has counselling and rehabilitation centres in 30 states already.
According to Embu, the NDLEA chairman assured that plans are on to establish seven more of such centres, adding that he called for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two agencies, which would streamline their areas of cooperation.
Meanwhile, Nafiu had earlier praised Marwa’s accomplishments at the NDLEA and other institutions, as well as the impressive records which he noted serve as reminders of his tenure as Lagos state governor.
Concerning the NDLEA chairman’s request for certified drug integrity testing for potential corps members, Nafiu stated that while it is a good idea, the NYSC is unable to take any action since it is a policy problem, particularly since the scheme’s enabling Act does not provide for it.
He noted that it would be implemented if it becomes a policy of the government.
