Court sentences Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment

The federal high court in Abuja has sentenced the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven terrorism charges filed by the federal government.

James Omotosho, the presiding judge, delivered the judgement on Thursday, four years after Kanu’s controversial arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.

Kanu was absent when the verdict was issued, following earlier disruptions in court that prompted the judge to order security operatives to remove him for what was described as unruly conduct.

Omotosho ruled that Kanu’s broadcasts on Radio Biafra, his sit-at-home directives in the south-east, and his recorded instructions encouraging attacks on security operatives amounted to acts of terrorism.

The court held that the prosecution successfully proved all allegations against him.
