Death toll in Niger state flood disaster rises to 151

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) says the death toll from two flood-hit communities in Mokwa LGA, Niger state, has risen to 151, with 3,018 people displaced.

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the director-general of NSEMA, gave the update in a statement on Saturday.

A midnight flood on Wednesday submerged three communities, including Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa LGA, after hours of torrential rainfall.

Baba-Arah added that the flood affected 503 households, 265 homes and washed away two bridges.

He said two roads were also washed away, while 11 people were injured in the disaster.

“The latest update from the Mokwa communities flood shows that 151 corpses have so far been recovered, while 11 persons were injured,” the statement reads.

“Also, 3,018 persons have been displaced, while 503 households were affected, and 265 homes washed away. Three communities in Mokwa LG were also affected, while two roads and two bridges were affected by the flood.”
