Egbetoku, Nandap — public officials granted tenure extension under Tinubu

On Monday, President Bola Tinubu approved the extension of the tenure of office of Kemi Nandap, the comptroller-general (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) by 16 months.

The Immigration CG was due for retirement on August 31, 2025, but the extension has elongated her term of office till December 2026.

However, Nandap is not the first public officeholder whose tenure has been extended by the president.

The Times of Abuja reports that at least four ministries, departments and agencies of the federal government have benefited from tenure extension.

Tinubu grants tenure extensions to multiple public officials

These include the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Nigeria Custom Service.

Kayode Egbetokun, IGP

Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), who was supposed to retire from the service on September 4, 2024, when he clocked 60 years was handed an extension of four years by the president.

The president extended Egbetokun’s tenure of office after the law regulating the appointment of the IGP was amended by the national assembly.

The Police Force noted that Egbetokun’s appointment is firmly grounded in law, specifically in Part III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended).

Samuel Udo Atang 

Tinubu also granted a six-month extension of service to Samuel Atang, the newly appointed head of service of the federal capital territory (FCT) civil service commission. The extension took effect on March 27.

According to the letter conveying the approval,  Atang’s extension was to ensure continuity and stability in administrative processes amid ongoing restructuring efforts within the FCT administration.

Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service

The tenure of office of six retiring officers of the Nigeria Customs Service was also extended by one year. Among them are three assistant comptroller generals (ACGs) and three comptrollers.
