NBC, Coca-Cola Nigeria refute FCCPC’s allegation of misleading product labelling

The beverages company said it is committed to transparency for consumers.

The management of Coca-Cola system, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria and its bottling partner, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited, has refuted the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)’s alleged misleading product labelling in the country.

The FCCPC on Thursday warned Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and the NBC limited over the use of misleading trade descriptions.

The council CCPC in a statement said the companies have been carrying out unfair tactics, thereby “misleading consumers”.

“In June 2019, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (Commission) became aware that Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited (Coca-Cola) and Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC) (jointly referred to as the “Companies”) had commenced a migration of their Coke brand from a formulation that included regular sugar to non-nutritive sweeteners,” the FCCPC statement reads.

However, in a statement on Friday, the Coca-cola system said it provides clear, accessible nutrition information on its packaging in line with national regulatory requirements.

The beverages company said it is committed to transparency for consumers.

“Our priority is safeguarding consumer interests, and we will continue to work constructively with the government on this matter,” the statement reads.

“We strongly believe that the Coca‑Cola System in Nigeria has complied with all regulations and look forward to the opportunity to bring this topic to closure.”
