Nigeria Defies Grid Collapses As Power Supply Surges to 5,713Mega Watt

Despite the incessant national grid failure that marred the power sector in the year 2024, Nigeria has sat up to defy the odds of low supplies of electricity generation.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, a federal government owned electric utility company, disclosed that the nation’s power generation hit 5,713.60 megawatts on Tuesday, the highest since four years ago.
The TCN announced in a statement on Tuesday that the electricity industry has successfully attained a new peak in its generation for 2025.
According to the statement, the accomplishment was made on Tuesday and surpassed the February 14 record of 5.543MW.
“This was recorded on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 21:30 hours, with the new generation peak of 5,713.60 megawatts (MW), surpassing the previous peak generation of 5,543.20MW achieved on February 14, 2025, by 170.40 MW,” the TCN stated.
It said that this new achievement is still a noteworthy accomplishment even if it is 88MW less than the all-time maximum peak generation of 5,801.60MW achieved on March 1, 2021.
Additionally, it stated that the highest daily energy increased from 125,159.48 megawatt-hours last month to 125,542.06 MWh.

“Furthermore, a new record for the maximum daily energy ever attained in the history of the electricity industry in Nigeria was also set yesterday, with a total of 125,542.06 megawatt-hours (MWh). This surpasses the previous record of 125,159.48MWh achieved on February 14, 2025, by 382.58 MWh,” the statement added.
Although Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, had assured Nigerians that by December 2024, electricity output will increase to 6,000MW.
However, grid failures, vandalism, and inadequate electrical infrastructure prevented this from happening.
Currently, more than half of Nigerians do not have access to power.
