NRC: Abuja-Kaduna train derailment caused by human error, overspeeding

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says an investigation has revealed that the derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train was caused by human error and overspeeding.
In a statement on Modnay, Kayode Opeifa, managing director of NRC, said 618 passengers were on bboard the train uring the incident.
He added that 22 passengers who sustained injuries are at different stages of recovery.
Opeifa said the NRC had contacted 512 victims of the accident, noting that 71 of them were either unresponsive, had incorrect contact information, or were unavailable.
He said the management has embraced the recommendations made by the company’s internal study into the accident.
Opeifa stated that the corporation would not make any final decisions until the ministerial committee and the NSIB submit their reports.
He said engineers had successfully re-railed and recovered all coaches and locomotives involved in the derailment.
The MD added that the main track line had been repaired to a safe level, with work continuing on the secondary track.
“Safety remains our top priority. The corporation reaffirms its determination to restore public confidence in rail services,” he said.
“Our in-house investigation revealed that the train was travelling at excessive speed, and the operator misapplied the emergency braking system.
“Management has accepted all recommendations of the investigative team,m and corrective measures are being implemented immediately.”
