NSC releases names, pictures of 281 inmates missing from Maiduguri correctional centre after flooding

Umar Abubakar, the public relations officer (PRO) of NSC, said it was observed that 281 inmates were missing after the evacuation of those in the facility during the flooding.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NSC) has released the names and pictures of 281 inmates who escaped from the medium security custodial centre Maiduguri (MSCC), Borno state, due to the recent flooding in the city.

In a statement on Sunday, Umar Abubakar, the public relations officer (PRO) of NSC, said it was observed that 281 inmates were missing after the evacuation of those in the facility during the flooding.

He added that the service is in custody of the details, including the biometrics of the missing inmates and are being made available to the public.

“The service is working in synergy with other security agencies as both covert and overt deployments have been activated to look out for them,” the statement reads.

“Presently, a total of seven (7) inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody, while efforts are on ground to track down the rest and bring them back to safe custody.

“While this effort is on, the public is assured that the incidence does not impede or affect public safety.”

Last week Tuesday, over 200 inmates reportedly escaped from the prison after severe flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The flooding was due to the collapse of the Alau dam, which has been at full capacity for the past few weeks.
