PHOTOS: Nigeria leads African countries in signing petroleum regulatory charter

Nigeria has reaffirmed its leadership in Africa’s oil and gas sector by spearheading the signing of a charter establishing the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF).
The landmark signing ceremony, chaired by Gbenga Komolafe, commission chief executive (CCE) of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), was held on Thursday on the sidelines of the 31st Africa Oil Week (AOW) in Accra, Ghana.
Regulators from 16 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Gambia, Madagascar, Sudan, Guinea and Togo, attended the event, alongside representatives from Kenya, Mauritania, Benin, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Morocco. Nigeria’s Senate Committee on Upstream chairman, Senator Etang Williams, joined as an observer.
At the ceremony, regulators from eight countries—Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Gambia, Madagascar, Sudan, Guinea and Togo—formally endorsed the AFRIPERF Charter. Seven others expressed support and pledged to join after internal consultations.
This milestone builds on a proposal introduced last year by Engr. Komolafe, who championed the creation of AFRIPERF to strengthen petroleum governance and foster investment across Africa.
