The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command says its operatives have arrested a man identified as Mohammed Aliyu for allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle in Maitama, Abuja.
In a statement on Monday, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, said the suspect was arrested on September 15 after the command received a distress call about an attempted car theft along Tigris Crescent, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama.
Adeh said a patrol team from the Maitama police division was dispatched to the scene, where Aliyu was arrested inside a vehicle while allegedly attempting to start and drive it away.
According to the police spokesperson, the vehicle, a black Hyundai Santa, belonged to a man identified as Ikechukwu, who had parked it while attending an appointment at a nearby office.
“Upon returning, he observed an unfamiliar individual inside the vehicle and raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of other persons in the vicinity,” the statement reads.
Adeh said preliminary investigations showed that Aliyu had previously been arrested in connection with two separate car theft incidents by the Garki and Zuba divisions.
She said the suspect had also served a prison term and was released from Keffi Prison in April 2026, adding that Aliyu remains in police custody and would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Ahmed Sanusi, FCT commissioner of police, urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
He also advised residents to use the command’s emergency numbers — 08032003913 and 08028940883 — to report security concerns.
