Sanwo-Olu: Lagos has recorded zero bank robberies in four years as security partnerships deepen

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, says the state has continued to make significant security gains due to improved collaboration between the government, private sector, security agencies, and residents.
Speaking on Thursday at the 19th Annual Town Hall Meeting of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), the governor said security thrives when citizens trust institutions and work collectively to keep communities safe.
Sanwo-Olu said the government alone cannot shoulder the burden of securing Africa’s largest city, noting that contributions from businesses, community structures and residents have strengthened the state’s safety architecture.
“Security shapes our economy, our quality of life, and the confidence of those who live and invest here,” he said. “The Trust Fund continues to stand out by uniting government, businesses and citizens to deliver real impact — from improved patrol capacity to surveillance tools and strengthened cybersecurity.”
He highlighted recent achievements made possible through LSSTF interventions, including a four-year stretch without bank robberies in Lagos and the disruption of home invasion gangs, with suspects arrested and weapons recovered.
Sanwo-Olu said the state has also deepened inter-agency collaboration and expanded community intelligence gathering through the Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
He noted that local efforts complement national security reforms championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose policies, he said, are helping modernise Nigeria’s security institutions.
Looking ahead, the governor said the state would scale up the use of technology, strengthen coordination among security agencies, enhance accountability, and prepare for emerging threats.
He urged businesses, civil society groups, community leaders and residents to remain engaged and vigilant.
“The safety of our people is the foundation of our prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu said. “We will continue building a Lagos that is secure, confident and full of opportunity for all.”
