SWAN nominates ex-president, Stephen Alabi, for Diamond Jubilee Award

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has nominated its former national president and the Olosi of Osi-Ekiti, Oba Stephen Adegboyega Alabi, for the association’s national diamond jubilee award.

The honour is part of activities marking the 60th anniversary of the association, established to promote professionalism and excellence in sports journalism across Nigeria.

In a statement jointly signed on Wednesday by Isaiah Benjamin, SWAN president and Ikenna Okonkwo, general secretary, the association said the recognition celebrates Alabi’s “leadership qualities, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment,” which have contributed immensely to SWAN’s growth and reputation over the decades.

The association described the royal father — who also serves as emeritus president — as a respected legal luminary, scholar, and traditional ruler, noting that his influence, wisdom, and passion for sports journalism have inspired generations of practitioners.

“As we commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of SWAN, it is with immense pleasure that we pay tribute to your invaluable contributions to the growth and development of our association,” the statements.

It added that Oba Alabi’s leadership helped strengthen unity among sports journalists and elevated professional standards within the association.

The SWAN National Diamond Jubilee Award (SWAN merit award) will be presented to him during the celebration scheduled for Friday, October 31, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
