Police suspend enforcement of tinted glass permit policy over court order

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the planned enforcement of the tinted glass permit over a court order.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police public relations officer (PPRO), said in a statement on Thursday that suspension of the tinted permit policy enforcement follows an interim order restraining issued by a federal high court.

The police had, on December 15, 2025, announced the resumption of enforcement of the policy, with effect from January 2, 2026, citing its mandate to ensure public safety and internal security.

However, Hundeyin said the force was served with an interim court order on December 17, 2025, in suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, which bars it from proceeding with the enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or the vacation of the order.

In compliance with the directive, the force spokesperson said NPF has placed the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy on hold across the country.

He said the force has entered an appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.

The court has adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

Hundeyin said Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), reaffirmed the commitment of the NPF to the rule of law while carrying out its responsibility of protecting lives and property.

Egbetokun said the force would continue to deploy lawful and intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges and safeguard public safety nationwide.

He assured members of the public that further updates and clear guidance would be communicated after the court reaches a decision, in the interest of public order and national security.
