The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has dismissed allegations of bias and irregularities in the ongoing selection process for the position of vice-chancellor.
On Tuesday, reports surfaced about a protest on the university campus allegedly involving some professors.
The protest reportedly centered around the selection of members for the vice-chancellor (VC) selection committee.
Unverified claims suggested that the governing council was attempting to install Aisha Sani Maikudi as the substantive VC, despite her alleged ineligibility under the advertised criteria.
However, in a statement on Wednesday, Habib Yakoob, acting director of information and university relations, refuted the allegations, asserting that Maikudi’s qualifications and accomplishments during her tenure are well-documented.
Yakoob reaffirmed the university’s commitment to a transparent and merit-based selection process in line with relevant regulations.
He also addressed claims of protests and alleged harassment of journalists, describing the situation as a misunderstanding.
The university’s spokesperson stated that no coercion or confrontation occurred during the alleged meeting, which he said never took place.
He reiterated the university’s management dedication to maintaining positive relationships with the media and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals on campus.
He called on all stakeholders to allow the selection process to proceed without interference or politicization, emphasizing its commitment to upholding fairness and integrity throughout the exercise.
