16,614 teachers write TRCN professional qualifying examination

An app to detect impersonation had been introduced for accreditation purposes.

No fewer than 16,614 candidates on Saturday sat for the batch ‘B’ professional qualifying examination (PQE) organised by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) across the country.

Stella Nwokeocha, the acting registrar of TRCN, who spoke while monitoring the examination in one of the centres in Abuja, noted that the process was smooth, nationwide.

“The 2024 qualifying exams is so seamless because we have a mobile app that we use for accreditation,” Nwokeocha said.

“By the time the exams are concluded, we will have professionalised teachers who are competent and equipped with the right knowledge and skills to effectively carry out teaching and learning in the classroom.”

She also urged the government to discontinue the policy of non-funding of the TRCN, an assist the council by paying workers’ salaries.

Also, Abubakar Isah, the director of information communication technology (ICT) at the federal ministry of education, who represented Nasiru Sani-Gwarzo, the permanent secretary, praised TRCN for conducting the examination in a seamless manner.

“The exam is to examine teachers, and we are proud to say that the examination is well organised and peaceful,” he said.

Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, the director of certification and licensing at TRCN, highlighted the council’s efforts to improve the examination process.

Ezeahurukwe said an app to detect impersonation had been introduced for accreditation purposes.

She added that TRCN is gradually transitioning to a fully online registration system by continuously improving its processes each year.

“In the past, we manually assigned numbers to candidates, but now the process is automated, with the computer generating candidates’ numbers,” she said.
