Three killed in Warri–Itakpe train derailment in Delta

Three people have been confirmed dead following the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe train in Agbor, Delta state, on Monday.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Kayode Opeifa, its managing director.
According to Opeifa, emergency response teams and relevant authorities were immediately deployed to the scene to provide assistance to affected passengers and manage the situation.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today,” the statement reads.
“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance.”
Opeifa said the corporation is closely monitoring developments and would provide additional information as investigations progress.
Although the NRC did not disclose casualty figures in its initial statement, the presidency later confirmed that three people lost their lives in the accident.
The presidency said in a post on X on Monday evening that authorities were still assessing the full circumstances surrounding the derailment while support was being provided to affected passengers.
“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time,” the post reads, adding that efforts were ongoing to determine the cause of the incident and evaluate its impact.
“The thoughts and prayers of all Nigerians are with the victims and their loved ones,” the presidency said.
The presidency also urged members of the public to rely on verified information and official updates from the NRC as investigations and response efforts continue.
