NDC: We’re building an enduring institution, not a personality cult

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening internal party structures, promoting accountability, and institutionalising its operations.

Osa Director, national publicity secretary of the NDC, said in a statement on Sunday that the resolutions were adopted at the party’s second national executive committee (NEC) meeting.

Director said NDC remains committed to building a strong and enduring institution anchored on party supremacy, stressing that governments elected on its platform must consult party structures before making major policy decisions, appointments, and implementing programmes.

According to him, all appointments, except those involving personal staff, as well as key government policies and programmes, should be made in consultation with the party.

“The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party,” the statement said.

He added that the NEC also resolved that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations associated with the party must operate under its guidance and control, warning against parallel structures functioning independently of the party.

As part of efforts to improve discipline and accountability, the publicity secretary  said NDC would establish a comprehensive code of conduct for party officials and candidates.

To achieve this, he added that the NEC constituted a committee headed by the national legal adviser to develop the framework and guidelines for the code.

He further announced the inauguration of a national reconciliation committee tasked with reconciling aggrieved members and strengthening internal cohesion.

Reaffirming the party’s long-term vision, Director said NDC is being built as an institution rather than a personality cult, political movement, or special purpose vehicle designed for short-term political gains.

He urged members to remain committed to its growth and sustainability, adding that allegiance to the party and the national interest must take precedence over personal ambitions.

On financial accountability, he said the party would enforce strict transparency in the management of its resources and ensure that funds are used solely for official activities.

He noted that the party also directed all candidates and aspirants to fully disclose funds received for campaigns and contributions made to campaign accounts at local government, state, zonal, and national levels.

He added that campaign funds must be channelled through designated party accounts, including governorship and presidential campaign accounts where applicable.
