NDLEA uncovers drugs hidden in water purifier machines shipped from Europe

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says its operatives have uncovered illicit drug consignments concealed in water purifier machines shipped from Europe to Lagos.

Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson, said in a statement on Sunday that operatives also intercepted military-grade ammunition and arrested multiple suspects across several states.

Babafemi said operatives discovered the concealed drugs at a courier company in Lagos on Tuesday, May 26.

He noted that the shipment, which originated from the Netherlands, contained 3 kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA (ecstasy) pills carefully hidden inside water purifier machines.

In Kaduna, the NDLEA spokesperson said operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, following the seizure of 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilograms from their residence in the Gonin Gora area on May 24.

“In a separate operation in the state, officers on patrol along the Abuja–Kaduna highway at Jere intercepted a suspect, Sunusi Musa, found in possession of 380 rounds of RLA 7.62mm military-grade ammunition reportedly heading to Katsina state,” he added.

“The suspect and the recovered ammunition have been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation.

“In Niger state, NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, raided a warehouse at Gidan Kukah in Bosso Local Government Area, where they recovered 457 kilograms of skunk. A suspect, Godwin Zakka, was also arrested at his residence in Gbeganu, Minna, in connection with the seizure.

“In Enugu State, operatives intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway on May 28. A search of the bus led to the recovery of 22,000 pills of tramadol, 100 ampoules of pentazocine, and 200 grams of bromazepam. A suspect, James Maigari Wisdom, was arrested in connection with the seizure.”

Buba Marwa, NDLEA chairman, commended officers of the Kaduna, Niger, and Enugu commands, as well as the directorate of operations and general investigation (DOGI), for their efforts in drug supply reduction and public sensitisation.

He urged personnel to sustain the momentum in both enforcement and awareness campaigns across the country.
