Police deny assassination attempt on naval officer involved in Wike altercation

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has debunked claims that AM Yerima, the naval officer recently involved in a confrontation with Nyesom Wike, FCT minister, was the target of an assassination attempt in Abuja.

Earlier reports circulating online on Sunday alleged that Yerima was pursued by two unmarked Hilux vehicles occupied by unidentified men dressed in black.

The alleged chase was said to have started near a NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa expressway and continued through the Gado-Nasco area.

However, sources familiar with the matter told The Times of Abuja that there was no attempt on the officer’s life.

According to the account, Yerima — who was driving a vehicle with tinted windows — was stopped by policemen around Kubwa on Sunday evening for routine identification. He presented himself and was allowed to proceed without incident.

In a statement on Sunday night, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, urged the public to disregard the reports, describing them as “false” and lacking any form of verification.

“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima,” she said, adding that there was no evidence to support the claims.

The police assured residents that security agencies remain committed to maintaining public safety in the territory.
