US-based Nigerian man arrested after stabbing attack that killed his father, injured two sisters

Chukwuebuka Eweni, a 27-year-old Nigerian man living in the US, has been taken into police custody after allegedly stabbing his father and two sisters in a late-night attack that left his father dead.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the family’s home on Pebble Drive in Louisiana.

According to local outlet WWL Louisiana, relatives confirmed that the victim, 59-year-old Samuel Eweni, was a computer science professor at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO).

Family members told the outlet that the attack was sudden and unprovoked, describing the evening as ordinary until Chukwuebuka allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed his father and siblings.

One sister has since been discharged from hospital, while the second remains hospitalised but is expected to recover.

Relatives said Chukwuebuka had a long history of mental illness but had never shown violence. They said they do not know what triggered the outburst.

After the stabbing, family members later learned that he went to New Orleans East Hospital, where he regularly sought mental health care.

Unaware of the earlier attack, the hospital transferred him to a facility in Jefferson Parish. Police tracked him there and arrested him on Wednesday morning.

Authorities have charged Chukwuebuka with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Southern University at New Orleans confirmed Eweni’s death in a statement on Wednesday.

Joseph Bouie Jr, SUNO Chancellor, described him as “more than an educator—he was a mentor and a guiding light to many students.”

“His contributions to the College of Business and Public Administration and to the university’s mission of transforming lives through education will be remembered and celebrated,” the school said, adding that the university community is mourning alongside his family and colleagues.
