Troops rescue wife of former army spokesperson who died in captivity

Troops of the Nigerian Army, with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), have rescued Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Rabe Abubakar, former director of defence information, who was abducted by bandits alongside her husband a few weeks ago.
Abubakar reportedly died while in captivity after the couple was kidnapped during a bandit attack, an incident that drew widespread concern within military and security circles.
According to a statement issued on Monday Samaila Uba, director of defence information, the rescue of the late Abubakar’s wife followed intensified search-and-rescue operations under Operation FASAN YAMMA, a military campaign targeting bandit strongholds in the North-West.
“The operation, which involved sustained offensive pressure on the criminals, led troops to make contact with the bandits at Tunga Village. The encounter resulted in the successful recovery of Mrs Abubakar,” the statement reads.
During the confrontation, the bandits reportedly shot the victim before fleeing the scene due to the advancing troops. She was immediately evacuated by the military and taken to a military medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding to care.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to her full recovery and are providing support to her family during the difficult period.
It added that troops will continue ongoing operations to track down those responsible for the abduction and attack, while intensifying efforts to clear terrorist and bandit networks across Katsina State and other affected parts of the country.
