Amaechi: I’ll withdraw from Atiku’s ticket if petrol drops to N600 per litre

Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he will withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential campaign and support President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for N600 per litre.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers state, spoke on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He challenged the Tinubu administration over the rising cost of living, arguing that the removal of the petrol subsidy without adequate measures to cushion its effects had made life more difficult for Nigerians.

Amaechi said he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to verify the price of petrol.

“Don’t bother about my views, I will go tomorrow morning to a petrol station myself so that you can see. If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu. If fuel comes down tomorrow to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.

Amaechi added that he would withdraw from Atiku’s ticket if the price reached the threshold.

“Tomorrow, if you are doubtful come with your camera tomorrow in the morning and I will go to a filling station and I will buy fuel, if it comes down to this thing, I Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will withdraw as the vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu if it has come down,” he said.

He also framed the 2027 presidential election as a choice between what he described as life and death.

According to Amaechi, “Tinubu represents the choice of death.”

His comments come against the backdrop of renewed political debate over petrol prices and the economic impact of the Tinubu administration’s removal of the fuel subsidy, with the cost of petrol remaining a major issue in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election.
