Police arrest man accused of raping 12-year-old girl in Abuja, say victim is three months pregnant

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command says operatives of its anti-Kidnapping unit have arrested a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in a parked vehicle in Abuja.

Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, said in a statement that the suspect, identified as Zayyanu Halilu, was arrested on Friday, October 2, after police officers on routine patrol around the Airport Bridge taxi park noticed a tinted navy-blue Volkswagen with registration number KMC567LQ parked with its windows wound up.

Adeh said officers became suspicious after noticing that the vehicle was shaking.

She said the officers approached the vehicle and opened it, where they allegedly found Halilu sexually abusing the minor.

According to the statement, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had allegedly lured and sexually abused the girl on several occasions in the same vehicle parked at the location.

The police said Halilu allegedly threatened to “deal with her” if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.

The command also said medical examination revealed that the girl was about three months pregnant as a result of the alleged abuse.

The victim is currently receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment, while the suspect remains in police custody.

The police said Halilu would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

The command also urged residents to report suspicious activities or persons to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
