Tinubu: I’ve lost sleep, weight over economic reforms ahead of 2027 elections

President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the hardship caused by his administration’s economic reforms, saying he has also “lost sleep and weight” while implementing policies aimed at stabilising the country’s economy.
Speaking on Sunday at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja after emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 elections, Tinubu said the reforms were difficult but necessary to reposition the country.
The president said his administration inherited a country in poor condition and had to take tough decisions to address economic challenges.
“I know what it takes to reform this nation we met in tatters. If you lost sleep, I’ve lost some too. If you’ve lost weight, I’ve lost some too,” he said.
“But I’ve always remembered one thing: in 2022, I asked for this job. You all supported me, and I got it. So, I must do it.”
Tinubu accepted the APC presidential ticket for the 2027 general election, expressing gratitude to party members and supporters for the confidence reposed in him.
“I accept with profound humility and gratitude the nomination of our great party, the APC, to stand again as your presidential candidate in the 2027 election,” he said.
The president defeated his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, in the APC direct primary election conducted across the country on Saturday.
Tinubu also commended party members for what he described as the peaceful conduct of the exercise across the 774 LGAs and 8,809 wards nationwide.
According to him, the absence of violence during the primary reflects the growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
“I was glued to the television after voting. I saw the mammoth crowd in Kano and Kaduna, the city boy walking the streets of Calabar,” he added.
“It was a good feeling to see that there was no bloodshed, no rancour. This is politics in earnest. This is where we want Nigeria, facing one focus.”
