Ibadan-based horologist: I have repaired watches for Gbenga Daniel, two former Oyo governors

The elderly horologist with an unwaning passion for his trade says he has passed the trade on to his children.

In the bustling street of the Oke-Ado area in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo, one man has quietly built a legacy in repairing wristwatches and wall clocks, and for nearly six decades Thompson Shode has remained faithful to the craft.

The elderly horologist with an unwaning passion for his trade says he has passed the trade on to his children.

After resigning from his secretarial position at the Inukan watchmaking industry in Ibadan, Shode dedicated himself to watchmaking, beginning as an apprentice in the same company and later establishing his workshop.

With 57 years of experience, Shode’s expertise has attracted a distinguished clientele, including two former governors of Oyo state, the late Abiola Ajimobi and Rashidi Ladoja, as well as former Ogun state governor Gbenga Daniel.

In his interview with multimedia journalist Ayo Adams, he said, “I have served former governors of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi and Rashidi Ladoja, and former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel.”

When asked about the fee he charged for the most expensive watch he had repaired, Shode said, “That is a difficult question to answer.”.

“My children know about this profession, but they do not practice full-time,” Shode said, reflecting on his long career.

His work has earned him a reputation that extends beyond Ibadan, as words about his craftsmanship spread among collectors and enthusiasts alike.

As he reflects on the past and the future of horology, Thompson Shode continues to inspire a new generation of watchmakers.

His dedication to the art form serves as a reminder that, while time may be fleeting, the skills and stories of those who master it endure.
