Kano government to spend N1.1 bn on free school uniforms

The Kano government has approved N1.1 billion for the procurement of free school uniforms for primary one pupil in the state to encourage enrolment.
In a statement on Friday, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, media aide to Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, said providing free school uniforms would boost enrollment, improve retention, and ensure equal opportunity.
Dawakin-Tofa said education is a right, not a privilege, noting that the initiative would ease the burden on parents.
“The move aims to attract out-of-school children into classrooms and complements other education reforms, aligning with the government’s comprehensive education agenda,” he added.
Kano state has long been grappling with high numbers of out-of-school children, particularly in rural and low-income communities.
Data from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) showed that northern Nigeria accounts for the majority of the country’s estimated 10.5 million out-of-school children, with Kano frequently cited among the top contributors
