Uba Sani: We’ve cleared over N13.5bn of N24bn inherited pension liabilities in Kaduna

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, says his administration has so far cleared over N13.5 billion out of the more than N24 billion pension liabilities inherited by the government.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) in Abuja on Friday, Sani said the state government remains resolute in completing the process.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare, dignity, and financial security of pensioners and retirees in the state.

During the visit the governor engaged the PENCOM’s leadership on strengthening pension administration and resolving longstanding challenges affecting retirees.

Sani said pensioners who dedicated their most productive years to public service deserve certainty, respect, and the assurance that government will uphold its responsibilities to them in retirement.

He expressed appreciation to Omolola Oloworaran, the director-general of PENCOM, and her management team for the warm reception, noting that her commendation of Kaduna state’s infrastructure drive, people-centred reforms, and efforts to clear inherited pension liabilities was encouraging.

According to the governor, the assurance of continued support from PENCOM through policy guidance and technical collaboration would strengthen efforts to build a pension system anchored on integrity, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

During the meeting, Sani stressed the need to deepen collaboration between the Kaduna State Government and PENCOM to ensure full compliance with the Contributory Pension Scheme and address structural issues that have burdened pensioners over the years

The governor also highlighted measures introduced to cushion the impact of the rising cost of living on pensioners, particularly the state’s compressed natural gas (CNG) mass transit scheme, which he said has been declared free indefinitely to reduce transportation costs and improve mobility.

“Our vision remains clear: a Kaduna State where service is honoured, retirement is secure, and governance is guided by responsibility and compassion,” Sani said.
