NYSC denies circulating pamphlet asking corps members to pay ransom if abducted

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed a pamphlet circulating on social media that advises corps members to pay ransom if kidnapped, describing it as fake and not representative of the scheme’s policies.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Caroline Embu, the director of information and public relations, said the attention of the NYSC management was drawn to the misleading document, which falsely claims to be an official safety guideline for corps members.
According to Embu, although a consultant submitted a similar document to the NYSC for consideration in 2021, it was never approved or adopted.
She stressed that the current pamphlet being shared online is neither an official publication nor a reflection of the Scheme’s stance on security matters.
“Management wishes to make it clear that the document being circulated is not an official NYSC publication and does not represent the Scheme’s policy regarding staff and Corps Members’ security; as such, it should be ignored,” the statement reads.
Embu reaffirmed the NYSC’s commitment to the welfare and safety of both staff and corps members, adding that the scheme continues to work closely with security agencies and other stakeholders to safeguard those participating in the national service programme.
