NYSC saves Lagos over N14bn annually, says DG

Olakunle Nafiu, the director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), says the scheme provides services worth over N14 billion annually to the Lagos state government and its residents.
Nafiu spoke during a courtesy visit to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, at the state government house, Marina, according to a statement by Caroline Embu, NYSC director of information and public relations.
He said the estimated value reflects the contributions of more than 44,000 corps members currently serving across the state in various sectors — including 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers.
The NYSC DG noted that Lagos remains the most preferred posting location for corps members, attributing this to the state’s relative safety and enabling environment.
“The purpose of my visit is to appreciate the Lagos State government for its consistent support to the scheme, strengthen our cordial relationship, and reassure His Excellency that NYSC will continue to deploy adequate corps members to serve in the state,” Nafiu said.
He commended Sanwo-Olu for the renovation of the temporary orientation camp at Iyana-Ipaja and the ongoing work on the 10,000-capacity permanent camp, expressing optimism that its completion would end the current practice of sending some corps members to neighbouring states for orientation.
Nafiu appealed to the governor to provide an ambulance for the NYSC secretariat and sustain the other areas of support that enhance the scheme’s operations in Lagos.
He also congratulated Sanwo-Olu on the successful remodelling of the National Theatre, describing it as a “national monument of repute.”
